Growing Up
|
Where are you from? I was born in London and as my father is American we moved back to New York immediatly. When i was seven my mother and I moved to Ireland to live with her side of the family in Waterford. How did you get involved in athletics? When I was nine I competed at a school sports day and won the sprint, I was then asked to join Ferrybank A/C. I didnt get serious about training and competeing until I was about 16. Describe what kind of training you did as a kid? We trained twice a week on grass just really running and sometimes doing shot or long jump after a few months Brid Golden took over and we started training at the track one of the two nights a week. What were your teammates like? Are you still in touch with them? Yes im still in touch with most of them, some of the girls I joined with are still involved so we have been friends for years. Can u remember your first race? My first race was in Ferrybank when I was nine I was only a member of the club a few weeks and it was long distance so we had to do a lap of the field, I did well but was so tired afterwards I couldnt stop crying.
Did you do any other events? When I started I did everythin and my first National medal was for long jump I came 2nd and jumped 4.19. I just did high jump then for a few years and didnt really do any other events, when i was 17 I started concentrating on long jump. When did you get serious about training? It wasnt until I was about 16, I just decided that id put in a big effort for the winters training and see how the competitions went. But I do think that I stepped it up a gear in this winters training mainly concentrating on getting my speed up for the long jump. Did anyone or a particular event inspire you? I couldnt say that any one event or athlete inspires me but I love watching good athletes compete and do well. Did you do any other sports? I was always into sports growing up I did basketball, camogie, gymnastics and soccer as I got older I realised that id rather do an individual sport where I didnt have to rely so much on a team. |
