Growing Up

Where are you from?

I come from Ballinamore in Co. Leitrim.

How did you get involved in athletics?

There is a big sporting tradition in my family. My dad founded Ballinamore AC in 1965, when he moved to Ballinamore to teach in the local secondary school. He coached my mother, who came from just outside Ballinamore. I attended my first athletics meeting, the Community Games in Mosney 3 weeks after I was born. My parents coach the athletic club, so it was obvious from a very young age that athletics would be a big part of my life.

Describe what kind of training you did as a kid?

Up to the age of 13, I trained 2-3 times a week. I also played football which would have been another 2 days a week. My training at that age focussed on speed and developing motor skills. It was varied and enjoyable.

What were your teammates like? Are you still in touch with them?

A few people in my class used to do athletics. We had a good laugh and I’m still in touch and good friends with most of them. I’m always reminded to this day of when some of them used to beat me!!

Can u remember your first race?

Yes I was four, and ran a 60m race in the Open Sports in Carrick-on-Shannon. I tripped and fell during the race, and didn’t know what to do. I looked over at my mother who told me to get up and finish!!

Did you do any other events?

I did many events - sprints, middle distance, long-jump and hurdles. I also played football. I was useful in most events at a young age.

When did you get serious about training?

I won a silver medal in the race walking event at the Community Games in Mosney, and it was then I realsed my potential as a race walker. I began to train specifically for the event at the age of 15.
