Ian McDonald Interview

Where are you from?

I am from Malahide a nice suburb town about 30mins outside Dublin city centre.

How did you get involved in athletics?

I first got involved in athletics in my school Belvedere, My main sport was rugby at the time. The fast players usually got enrolled into track and the big forwards on the rugby team got enrolled into the field side of athletics. One day I heard we missed school if we competed for our school so that was a big enough incentive for me and I have been hooked ever since.

Describe what kind of training you did as a kid?

I got involved in athletics mainly only in my last year of school so rugby training was all I did. I hurdled once or twice a week in the meantime.

Can u remember your first race?

Yes, it was the west leinsters, intermediate age group, I remember showing up on the start line in runners looking around at all these others athletes wearing weird shoes called spikes and dressed in female attire called spandex. I just laughed.  I won my heat and enjoyed the race, came nowhere in the final.

When did you get serious about training?

I got serious in my last year in school. I was getting more out of the running with little or no training compared to the rugby in which I was training everyday. So I quit the rugby and gave running a good go. I trained 4 times a week for athletics from that day onwards and the more I trained the more I got into it.

Did anyone or a particular event inspire you?

My school coach Phil Conway who was also the crusaders president he kept an eye on me and pushed me even further into the sport where there was no turning back.

What are the difficulties facing you as a full/part time athlete?

The difficulties at the moment are trying to stay on top of studying for exams and also trying to work to get a bit of cash to get by.

Do other athletes train with you?

I usually try and hook up with Peter Coghlan for sessions. He has so much knowledge about the event and sport and he has been a good mentor to be in track and outside it.

What are your favourite sessions?

Hurdle sessions, there nothing better than running flat out and trying to clear obstacles at the same time. It’s a good feeling.

What is your least favourite session?

Lactic sessions, any sessions over 110metres, and fitness sessions, circuits, tempo ect.

How important is nutrition to you?

Not really that important, I know it is but I haven’t experimented with this side of the training yet. As linford Christie says "if the furnace is hot enough it will burn"
